This is a special time of year for giving thanks.
At the Vilas County Economic Development Corporation (VCEDC), we are thankful for our community whose support is helping us build a strong, resilient Northwoods economy for current and future generations. As the season of giving begins, we are writing to share an opportunity to partner with us on our year-end fundraising appeal.
The VCEDC has been hard at work putting Vilas County ‘on the map’ as a broadband destination, as well as supporting existing and new businesses with business planning, financial guidance, marketing, and guiding $200,000 in Mainstreet Bounceback grants for 20 area businesses to open or expand in Vilas County. All of our services are offered at no cost because of the generosity of our donors. You make it possible for us to work towards sustainable solutions for businesses and individuals that will have lasting impact. However, there is still more work to do. For example, we still face challenges with broadband access as highlighted by Wendy’s story:
“I moved to the Eagle River area to be closer to my family. I am a single mom, and I moved here with my two children who were both in high school at the time. When my new house was built I started to look for internet providers, and I just assumed since the house two doors down had internet that it would be no problem to get online. Unfortunately, the infrastructure did not extend to my house, and they needed to start from scratch digging lines. When COVID hit and we still did not have internet, I had to drive my daughter to the McDonald’s parking lot in the middle of winter so she could finish papers and submit homework. I missed out on countless remote working opportunities with my job as a Medical Assistant, and I had to delay my studies to become a Registered Nurse because I didn’t have internet access at home.”
Wendy contacted her local state representative, and he immediately referred her to the VCEDC for help. Since then, the VCEDC has established and led a county-wide broadband initiative, which has helped secure three Wisconsin Public Service Commission (PSC) Broadband Grants in the 2022 grant round, a $15 million investment in Vilas County that will bring fiber broadband service to 2,555 homes and businesses. Our work continues. Wendy now has internet so her children can study at home and if needed, Wendy can work remotely. These stories are what drive us to ensure that Vilas County remains a premier place to live and work for people like Wendy and her children.
None of our work would be possible without you, our donors. During this season of giving, would you please consider a tax-deductible gift to the VCEDC? You can donate with a check or by clicking the Donate button below. The VCEDC is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization in Wisconsin.
On behalf of the VCEDC, best wishes to you and your family this holiday season.
Please enjoy the artwork below from children in the Northland Pines elementary schools who we’re delighted to feature what they love most about growing up in our Northwoods. Thank you for your generosity as we all work to maintain a strong economy for current and future generations.
