The Vilas County Economic Development Corporation, (VCEDC), a 501 (C) (3) non profit corporation, is seeking a self-motivated, talented, energetic individual to help lead and develop our organization. The core responsibilities of this leadership position are to develop, coordinate, and implement business creation, retention, expansion, and development in support of the VCEDC mission. The mission of the VCEDC is to provide innovative leadership and regional infrastructure to help improve the economic wellbeing of businesses, communities and residents; promote creation, retention, and attraction of viable businesses and quality jobs; and provide increased opportunities for education strengthening workforce development.

An ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years of economic development or business development experience; a bachelor’s degree in business, public administration or related field; strong oral and written communication skills, strong marketing skills, and an understanding of business finance. Candidates will also need to be skilled in content development for the VCEDC website, social media, and be able to help with advertising through Google. The best candidates will need to be able to relate well to private and public sector executives. The VCEDC has a strong, diverse, volunteer working board, and strong consideration will be given to candidates who otherwise fit this description but lack economic development experience as the VCEDC is prepared to help a new executive director develop those skills and experience through formal training as well as local mentoring and coaching from our current executive director and our board. The VCEDC board offers candidates an excellent network of business leaders who can help a new executive director learn about and understand economic development programs. 

Job Title: Executive Director

Reports to: Board Chairman

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Manage the organization and implement the policies, goals and activities of the organization (as governed by the VCEDC by-laws and guided by the Executive Committee and Board of Directors).

  • Represent the organization, business community and county in a professional and ethical manner.

  • Effectively communicate, collaborate and cooperate with local, regional and state economic development professionals to enhance VCEDC’s reputation, financial support, programs and services.

  • Work with other economic development initiatives as appropriate to ensure VCEDC representation and effectiveness. 

  • Measure and report the successes of the VCEDC based on the businesses we have directly helped and the number of jobs they have created/maintained, quantifiable education support, number of NET Class Graduates, and businesses that the VCEDC has had a key role in attracting to locate in Vilas County. 

  • Provide operational support for the incubator in Eagle River. 

Responsibilities for Community Outreach Within and outside Vilas County: 

  • Oversee the VCEDC Board of Directors fundraising efforts to procure the optimal financial support for the organization’s operations, programs and services.

  • Be responsible for the development and implementation of a comprehensive, countywide economic development effort of policies, programs and services in a quality manner, including those related to business retention and expansion, business development, workforce development and business attraction. 

  • Be responsible for the ongoing evolution and accomplishment of the VCEDC strategic plan, including the strategic goals, objectives and actions accomplished in a reasonable and timely manner.

  • Identify creative ways to communicate VCEDC messages to local audiences as well as to audiences that we want to attract to bring more businesses to the Northwoods. This should include but not be limited to

    • VCEDC Newsletter

    • Public Relations Opportunities

    • Social Media

    • Events

    • Press/Media

    • Press Releases

  • Explore all avenues of funding available to local businesses, including all state and local revolving loan funds and grant programs.

  • Develop and maintain good relationships with the Vilas County Board of Supervisors, the various Town Chairpersons, chamber leaders, community leaders and the general public.

  • Work with entrepreneurs and businesses as needed to help find the optimum operating environment to support their business plan. This might be a home office, EOE Network office space, the VCEDC incubator, or other commercial property that the VCEDC can help identify.

  • Identify and develop creative approaches to address workforce shortages and development issues that are challenging area businesses.

Responsibilities within the VCEDC: 

  • Oversee the VCECD budget using financial resources in an ethical and prudent manner.

  • Establish and maintain a strong working relationship with the board members including communicating and cooperating with individual board members and the Executive Committee, in an effective and professional manner.

  • Help various board work groups stay focused on tasks at hand including financial sustainability, and continuing partnerships with other local, county and regional organizations.

  • Work with the board chairman and board members as opportunities and challenges arise, to identify ways to reprioritize and/or share workload to ensure the most efficient, cost effective operations possible.

Responsibilities beyond Vilas County: 

  • Be aware of economic development efforts and activities that are occurring not only in the north woods, but outside of Vilas County as well, to learn from their experiences and also be prepared to support them as appropriate in keeping with VCEDC goals.

A full range of compensation is between $50K and $80K with the final offer based on education, skills, and experience.

This position begins January 1st, 2020 with the executive director’s office being located in Eagle River, Wisconsin. 

Weekly travel within Vilas County, to communities such as Lac du Flambeau, Manitowish Waters, Boulder Junction, Land ‘O Lakes, and Phelps is expected.
